Get to Know Our Year Four Venue: New Zealand’s National Library

7in7 Logo

This year, the 7in7 Conference will take place in Wellington at the Tiakiwai Conference Centre located at the National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa.

All 7in7 workshops and the main stage event are located in the same building, but you will also find places to work, eat, explore, and shop within the National Library.

? About the Venue

The National Library is over a century old and steeped in the rich culture, heritage, and Taonga (Māori for “a treasured possession”) of New Zealand.

The library was a gift from Alexander Turnbull, a wealthy merchant and self-proclaimed bibliomaniac. It’s currently part of the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs and is protected by legislation that preserves and develops historical and cultural collections, as well as public documents, for the people of New Zealand.

? Exhibits and Collections

The vast collections at the National Library span across topics ranging from an archive of New Zealand Music, to a photographic archive from the 1840s to present day. There are also oral histories, art, and books and newspaper articles on a variety of topics.

The He Tohu exhibit explores three constitutional documents of New Zealand: The Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand; The Treaty of Waitangi, and the 1893 Women’s Suffrage Petition. There is a 30-minute free guided experience of this permanent exhibition every day at 12:30pm.

There is a new exhibition called Pūkana: Moments in Māori Performance, that highlights and celebrates this important part of Māori culture. The exhibition is accompanied by public events, so be sure to check out the National Library’s website for more information. It opened mid-September and runs until May 2020.

You can find out more information about the collections, exhibits, and other offerings by going to the National Library’s website.
